The Literary Studies Program
The Literary Studies Program combines close attention to major literary works with theoretical reflection on the variety of contexts that give meaning to literature. The program exposes students to a wide range of texts across numerous national, linguistic, and cultural boundaries, drawing upon the multiple interdisciplinary resources of history, philosophy, psychoanalysis, the visual arts, post-colonial and gender studies in order to address the genealogy and logic of such concepts as “literature”, “writing”, “canon”, “tradition”, “nation”, “self”, and the “West”.
Who is enrolled in the Literary Program?
Literary Studies offers a wide-ranging and yet coherent adjunct to Major or Specialist programs in English, Classics, Modern Languages, Philosophy, Political Theory, Film Studies, Women's Studies, Caribbean Studies, Renaissance Studies, Semiotics, or any discipline in which the study of language, culture, or interpretation is central.
NEW: The Literary Studies program now offers Major and Specialist programs in Comparative Literature and Interdisciplinary Studies. Students may also complete the Minor in Literary Studies or the Joint Specialist with Philosophy.
