$2M Jackman Gift to Endow Professorships

Victoria University announces a gift of $2 million from The Hon. Henry N.R. Jackman Vic 5T3 in support of its campaign, Imagination Unbound. This gift will create two endowed professorships in Vic’s flagship first-year program, Vic One: the Mary Rowell Jackman Professorship (Northrop Frye stream) in memory of his mother, and The Hon. Newton W. Rowell Professorship (Lester B. Pearson stream) in memory of his grandfather.

“Hal Jackman is one of Canada’s great philanthropists, whose support of excellence in education and the arts is unparalleled,” says Professor Paul Gooch, president of Victoria University. “Vic is blessed beyond measure by his gift, which will help secure for future generations of students the advantages of a personal education in Vic One.”

“My family has a long association with Victoria College, a history that dates back to the 19th century. I have maintained a connection to Vic since I graduated in 1953,” says Jackman, former lieutenant governor of Ontario and former chancellor of the University of Toronto.

Jackman, renowned for his philanthropy, has supported many causes close to his heart. His generosity to both Vic and the University of Toronto includes a landmark, $30-million gift to support the humanities at U of T–the largest contribution in support of the humanities ever made by an individual Canadian. “I’m very impressed with Vic One,” says Jackman, “and I’m grateful to be able to strengthen this exceptional program through the establishment of these two professorships.”
